    STARTING SCHOOL

We recognise that starting school can be challenging for many children. Therefore, we provide the children with a phased induction period to ease them into school gently, allowing time for the children to meet staff, explore their new school environment and become familiar and comfortable with their new routines and settings.

In July, parents are offered the opportunity to come into school for a tour of the department and attend a welcome meeting with staff. This will be followed by an induction period for the children.

Meeting the Needs of our Reception children

    • We prioritise providing emotional support to help children feel secure and confident as they start school.
    • We recognise our students have a range of learning needs, including difficulties with communication, interaction, and cognition. We tailor our approach to ensure that every child receives the individualised support they need to develop foundation knowledge and skills.
    • Our small classes have only 8 pupils, each supported by a teacher and at least one teaching assistant to provide a high level of individual attention.
    • We use visual schedules, Now & Next boards, and clear routines to support pupils in understanding.
    • Many of our pupils benefit from movement breaks and calming strategies woven throughout the school day to support their engagement and well-being.
