TYPES OF ROLES
At Marjory Kinnon School, every member of our team plays an essential role in creating a nurturing, inspiring, and inclusive environment for our pupils. Whether you’re a teacher, therapist, support staff member, or governor, your contribution is vital in making a lasting impact on the lives of the children in our care. Below, we’ve highlighted some of the key roles within our school community:
Teachers
Our teachers are passionate, dedicated professionals who deliver creative and engaging lessons tailored to the unique needs of each student. At MKS, you’ll be empowered to adapt your teaching methods, embrace a variety of learning styles, and collaborate with a strong support team to ensure every pupil reaches their full potential.
A key aspect of working here is identifying the individual needs of each student while creating a safe, stimulating, and supportive learning environment. Your responsibilities will include planning lessons, teaching small groups or individuals, assessing progress, and adapting traditional teaching strategies to meet diverse needs. You’ll also work closely with professionals such as social workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, and educational psychologists, and collaborate with parents and carers to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students.
We offer extensive ongoing training to support your professional development.
Minimum Requirements:
- A relevant degree from a UK university or a recognized international institution (NARIC assessment required for international degrees).
- Degree should relate to the subject area you wish to teach (secondary), though not required for primary.
- GCSE Grade C or above in English, Maths, and Science (for primary roles).
- Experience working with children or young people is beneficial.
Early Career Teachers (ECTs)
Looking to start your teaching career in a supportive and dynamic environment? Join us as an Early Career Teacher (ECT) and make a difference!
Contrary to the misconception, you can complete your induction year in an SEN school, and many ECTs find it to be a rewarding and invaluable experience. At Marjory Kinnon School, you will have the opportunity to develop creative teaching strategies, learn behaviour management techniques, and collaborate with experienced professionals such as OTs, SaLTs, and physiotherapists. You’ll also lead a team of Teaching Assistants (TAs) and gain invaluable experience in a variety of teaching settings.
From day one, you’ll receive the support you need to thrive in your new role and develop at your own pace. We offer ECTs a comprehensive induction, ongoing training, and professional mentorship to help you build a strong foundation for your teaching career.
Benefits for ECTs:
- A comprehensive induction programme
- A well-resourced, well-organised workplace
- Training in our core principles and strategies
- A supportive and collaborative team culture
- Opportunities to contribute your own creative ideas
- Continuing mentoring and training throughout your ECT years
- Career progression opportunities within the school
Teaching Assistants & Learning Support Staff
Teaching Assistants are essential to the smooth running of our school. These dedicated professionals work directly with pupils, offering one-on-one or small group support. It’s a rewarding role where you’ll have a direct impact on the children’s daily learning experiences.
Your responsibilities may include supporting pupils during lessons, preparing classroom materials, assisting with school events or outings, creating engaging displays, and ensuring the classroom remains organised. Flexibility is key, as no two days are the same!
In this role, you’ll serve as a role model, so strong communication skills, organisational ability, and creativity are crucial. We provide ongoing training and opportunities for career progression. Many of our Teaching Assistants go on to become teachers, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Apprentices
As an apprentice at Marjory Kinnon School, you’ll gain hands-on experience in the classroom while earning a wage. You’ll work closely with teachers to assist with tasks like reading with students, supervising activities, and helping with outings.
We offer Level 2 and Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeships. If you’re over 18, not in full-time education, and based in England, this could be the perfect opportunity to kick-start your career in education.
Therapists
Our multidisciplinary therapy team includes Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and other specialists who provide essential interventions to support the development of communication, motor, and social skills. Therapists play a key role in the holistic development of our students and work collaboratively with teachers and support staff.
Support Services
Behind the scenes, our Support Services team ensures that everything runs smoothly.
Roles within this team include:
- Finance – Managing budgets, payroll, and financial planning to support the school’s resources.
- HR – Ensuring staff feel supported, valued, and well-informed.
- Operations & Facilities – Overseeing site management, security, and ensuring our learning spaces are safe and well-maintained.
- Marketing – Promoting the school’s achievements and connecting with the local community.
Governors
Our governors provide strategic oversight and guidance, bringing diverse expertise to shape the school’s direction. We welcome individuals with backgrounds in education, business, or the local community who are passionate about improving outcomes for children with SEND.
Governors commit to attending a minimum of three Full Governing Body meetings and three daytime Committee meetings annually. Induction training is provided for new governors.
For more information about becoming a governor, please email our Clerk to the Governing Body through the school office at office@mks.org.uk.
