Curriculum

Our Early Years curriculum is designed to build confidence, curiosity, and essential life skills through play-based, structured, and sensory-rich activities. These experiences are planned to encourage communication, independence, and social interaction while allowing each child to explore and learn at their own pace.

We follow a thematic way of teaching and learning in the early years; each week we have a chosen book of the week around which all other areas of learning are planned.

“The early years of school are focused on building strong foundations using a curriculum designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence.”  - Mr J. Kalman, Deputy Headteacher, Early Years and Key Stage 1

Key Areas of Learning

The statutory EYFS framework identifies seven key areas of learning:

Prime Areas of Learning

These are the fundamental building blocks for development and are central to all that we do:

  1. Communication and Language – developing listening skills, attention, understanding, and speech
  2. Physical Development – building fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and self-care abilities
  3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development – supporting confidence, relationships, and emotional regulation

Specific Areas of Learning

These areas provide a rich and varied learning experience:

  1. Literacy – early reading and writing, using the Read Write Inc. phonics programme
  2. Mathematics – developing an understanding of numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving
  3. Understanding the World – exploring the environment, people, places, and technology
  4. Expressive Arts and Design – encouraging creativity through art, music, movement, and imaginative play

Personalised Support for Progress

We deliver the curriculum in a variety of adapted and differentiated ways to meet the unique needs of our pupils, including those with communication difficulties, sensory processing needs, and social interaction challenges. Small class sizes and high staff-to-pupil ratios ensure that every child receives individual support to thrive and develop at their own pace.

Regular observation and assessment help us understand your child’s progress and interests, allowing us to plan meaningful next steps in their learning. We work in close partnership with families, recognising that you are your child’s first and most important teacher.

A Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Our goal is to provide a joyful, engaging, and supportive start to school life, laying strong foundations for future learning and independence. We are proud of how our Early Years pupils grow in confidence and capability—and we are with them every step of the way.
