Videos of Makaton Signs

At Marjory Kinnon School, we have identified 50 core Makaton signs that we teach, promote and use consistently throughout the school day.
These signs have been chosen because they are relevant to all our pupils and provide lots of opportunities for communication in everyday situations. By using the same signs consistently, we aim to help pupils develop their understanding and confidence in communicating with others.
The signs are organised into nine sections below. We have included a video for each individual sign so you can watch, learn and practise alongside us.
Families are encouraged to watch the videos with their children and use the signs together at home. The more opportunities children have to see and experience signs in everyday situations, the more familiar and meaningful they become.
Tips for using Makaton
You don't need to be an expert to get started! Here are some tips to help you use Makaton with your child:
-
Say the word as you sign. Always use speech alongside the sign.
-
Make it part of everyday life. Use signs during mealtimes, play, bath time, reading and other familiar routines.
-
Keep going! Don't worry if your child doesn't sign back. Makaton supports understanding as well as helping children express themselves.
-
Be consistent. The more you use signs, the more familiar and automatic they will become.
-
Start small. Choose a few signs to learn and practise first, then gradually add more as you become confident.
-
It's never too early or too late. You can start using signs with children at any age.
