Preparation for Adulthood

Preparing for the Future

We understand that preparing for adulthood is about more than just qualifications—it's about giving every young person the confidence, skills, and real-world experiences they need to move forward with purpose. Our role is to support each student in finding a meaningful next step that reflects their strengths, aspirations, and individuality. Whether it's college, further training, or supported employment, we work closely with families and partners to ensure every transition is as smooth and successful as possible.

Careers education at Marjory Kinnon begins in Key Stage 3 and continues through Key Stage 4, forming an essential part of our Work-Related Learning Curriculum.

This programme is designed to give pupils the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to make informed choices about their futures.

“Leaders provide pupils with a comprehensive programme of impartial careers guidance. The different curriculum pathways cater for pupils’ needs and aspirations.”  - Ofsted

Key Stage 3: Building Skills for Life and Work

In Key Stage 3, the curriculum focuses on developing foundational life skills. These include building early independence, communication skills, self-awareness, decision-making and personal responsibility. Pupils are supported to build the essential skills needed for everyday life, social interaction and participation in their communities.

For pupils following our semi-formal pathway, learning is centred on developing functional communication, early independence, engagement and basic daily living skills. Pupils on our formal pathway develop these skills alongside increasing opportunities to explore personal strengths, interests and future aspirations.

Pupils across both pathways participate in early skills-building workshops (such as Happy Confident Kids) and whole-school enterprise activities, including the annual Enterprise Sale, providing opportunities to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial skills in practical, real-life contexts.

Key Stage 4: Practical Learning and Real-World Experience

As pupils progress into Key Stage 4, the curriculum develops into a more careers-focused programme, introducing employability skills, workplace expectations, and work-related learning, as part of preparation for adulthood (post 16). Careers learning is tailored to pupils' individual needs, strengths and aspirations.

Our Work & Life Skills programme is accredited in Key Stage 4 through a practical, skills-based approach using ASDAN and Introductory BTEC qualifications. These recognised qualifications enable pupils to demonstrate and celebrate their achievements through practical application whilst developing valuable skills for employment, independent living and community participation. Accreditation pathways are carefully selected to ensure they are accessible and meaningful for pupils with a range of learning needs and abilities.

Pupils on the semi-formal pathway (ASDAN) focus on developing independence, community participation, workplace readiness, functional communication and personal wellbeing skills, while pupils on the formal pathway (Introductory BTECs) engage in more structured careers focused exploration and work-related learning. Across both pathways, pupils are exposed to a range of post-16 opportunities and develop the practical skills required for their next stage of education and adulthood.

Family Involvement

Throughout the year, information about preparation for adulthood is provided and readily available to pupils, parents/carers, teachers and employers. Details can be accessed through the school's website, careers policy, curriculum information, annual review meetings, parental communication channels and direct contact with the school's Careers Leader. Careers guidance and future planning form an integral part of annual reviews and Preparation for Adulthood discussions, ensuring pupils and families are actively involved in planning for future outcomes.

We offer opportunities for parents to actively engage throughout the year, including:

  • Post-16 Transition Fair
  • Parent meetings with Careers Leader
  • Post-16 provider sessions
  • Secondary Enterprise Fair

"The support our daughter received as she prepared to leave school was outstanding. The staff really listened to her—and to us—and helped her explore different options without pressure. We feel confident she’s on the right path now, and that means everything." — Parent of a Year 11 Leaver

Post-16 Pathways

When pupils leave Marjory Kinnon School at 16, there are three main pathways available:

  1. Local Supported Learning College
Pupils typically access Foundation or Level 1 vocational courses with additional support.

  2. Specialist Sixth Form Provision
Pupils may transition into a special school Sixth Form environment designed for post-16 learners with SEND.
  3. Supported Internships
These structured work-based learning programmes prepare young people for employment with tailored support.

We provide a comprehensive list of local college open days, key dates, and online information sessions helping families make informed decisions and complete applications with confidence.

Who We Work With

Employers, training providers and post-16 settings are encouraged to engage with the school through careers events, workplace encounters, enterprise activities and work-related learning opportunities, helping pupils gain meaningful experiences of the world of work and develop an understanding of the opportunities available to them after school.

To enhance our provision, we work closely with local careers networks and organisations, including the Feltham Convening Partnership, Youth Careers Collective, and the London Borough of Hounslow. These partnerships help provide meaningful employer encounters, early careers experiences, labour market information and post-16 guidance that are accessible and relevant to our pupils and their families, ensuring that learners are well supported in preparing for their future adult lives.

Provider Access Information

In line with statutory guidance, all students in Years 8 to 11 are entitled to:

  • Learn about technical education and apprenticeship opportunities
  • Hear from a range of education and training providers
  • Understand how to make applications for the full range of post-16 academic and vocational courses

For more information, please see our Provider Access Policy Statement.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Review

The impact of our careers programme is measured and evaluated through a range of quality assurance processes. As members of the West London Careers Hub, we undertake regular internal reviews of our careers provision and assess our progress against the Gatsby Benchmarks to ensure the programme is effective, relevant and appropriately tailored to the needs of our SEND learners. Outcomes from these reviews are used to inform future planning and development and are shared with the Senior Leadership Team and Governors.

We also look to gather feedback from pupils, parents/carers, staff, employers and external partners to assess the effectiveness of careers activities, work-related learning experiences and employer encounters. Pupil destinations, engagement levels, progress towards Preparation for Adulthood outcomes and achievement within accredited programmes such as ASDAN and Introductory BTEC qualifications are used to measure impact and drive continuous improvement.

Date of next review: December 2026.
